COVID-19 Cases Climbed in Nuclear Security Enterprise This Week, NNSA Says

New infections eclipsed recoveries this week across the National Nuclear Security Administration’s labs, plants and sites, where there were 41 more active COVID-19 cases than in the prior week, an agency spokesperson said Friday. The agency discloses only confirmed cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus that broke out in Wuhan, China, late last year. At deadline, the agency had tracked 794 confirmed cases among its contractors and civil servants since the disease was confirmed to have reached U.S. shores in January, up 71 since the prior week. Thirty employees recovered from their bouts this week, the spokesperson said. Two National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) employees have died from COVID-19 since the U.S. outbreak started: one who worked at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tenn., another who worked at the Nevada National Security Site.
