Workers Start Moving Radioactive Waste From La Crosse Boiling Water Reactor

Workers have started moving radioactive waste from the La Crosse Boiling Water Reactor-which was shut down in 1987~in dry casks for storage in a location at Genoa, Wis. Plans call for removal of five casks from the reactor site this summer. The reactor was built by the federal government as a demonstration site in 1967 at a cost of approximately $21 million. It was later sold to the Dairyland Power Cooperative, which operated the facility for 18 years, generating more than four billion kilowatt hours of power.
