No Radioactive Contamination at PA Site, Army Corp of Engineers Reports

The Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh District, reported tests of groundwater at a nuclear waste dump site in Parks, Pa., have not shown any radioactive or chemical contamination migrating from the location. The Corps reported the Environmental Protection Agency had called for the testing at the 44-acre facility, known as the Shallow Land Disposal Area, along Route 66. The groundwater testing at the site was conducted in response to concerns expressed by area residents, and by U.S. Sen. Robert P. (Bob) Casey Jr., D-Pennsylvania. Chemical contaminants including trichloroethylene (TCE) have been detected in groundwater within the facility but not outside of its boundaries, the Corps said.
