Hanford Site Acquires New Monitoring Equipment, Following Leak Incidents

A landfill on the Hanford nuclear reservation is undergoing expansion with equipment that wasn't available when the reservation opened a dozen years ago.The U.S. Energy Department (DoE) is modernizing he reservation's central landfill - known as the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility -with global positioning system (GPS) monitors on compactors to track how many times the debris is crushed down to prevent sinkholes. The computerized monitors will alert managers if they detect a problem with leaching.
