Macfarlane Starts New Five-Year Term

Dr. Allison Macfarlane, who joined the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as a member and chairman last July following the resignation of Gregory B. Jaczko, won U.S. Senate confirmation on June 27 and was sworn in to a full, five-year term on July 1, 2013. She was designated by President Obama to continue serving as the agency's chairman. Dr. Macfarlane is the third woman to serve as NRC chairman, but is the only person with a background in geology to serve on the Commission (NRC News Release No. 13-055, July 1,2013).
