In the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the Kudankulam Atomic Power Project (KKNPP) consists of two units of the advanced model of Russian VVER-1000 MW Pressurized Water Reactor. The design has been evolved from earlier designs of VVER plants, of which 15 units are under operation for the last 25 years. These reactors fall in the category of advanced light water reactors being developed by various West European countries and Japan. Salient safety features incorporated in plant at KKNPP include: 1. Passive heat removal system to provide cooling for removal of decay heat. 2. Higher redundancy for safety systems. 3. Double containment. 4. Larger numbers of control rods. 5. Additional shutdown systems for the reactor like a second quick-acting shutdown system and quick boron-injection system. 6. Advanced instrumentation systems of advanced technology for Reactor Systems and Balance of Plant as well as for Plant Computer System. The design of the Kudankulam reactors also incorporates additional safety features such as a core catcher and Hydrogen management system to mitigate severe accident scenarios as witnessed at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan.
