NRC okays construction of MOX fuel facility

A consortium of Duke, Cogema, and Stone & Webster gains NRC approval to build a MOX fuel fabrication plant. On March 30, the consortium of Duke, Cogema, and Stone & Webster (DCS) was authorized by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to construct a mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel facility at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina. The NRC's staff performed environmental and safety reviews to ensure that the facility's design will have minimal environmental impacts and will protect the public's health and safety. Although construction authorization was issued in accordance with regulatory procedures, the adju-dicatory process on certain issues remains open, according to the NRC. Parties in the adjudicatory hearing, which will be heard by an NRC Atomic Safety and Licensing Board, will have an opportunity to submit contentions challenging the agency's safety review.
