As the industry consolidates, utility people need to take advantage of the resources at their disposal, including their suppliers. Outage preparation includes making sure that spare parts are in stock for when they are needed. George Shampy has served on both sides of the supply-chain aisle. For 10 years he worked for the utility Progress Energy (and its predecessor, Carolina Power and Light) as manager of Materials and Contract Services at the two-unit Brunswick nuclear power plant, in Southport, N.C. In 2001, he crossed over to work on the vendor side, and now he is director of Technical Services for Nova Machine Products, a division of Curtiss-Wright.
