There have been some interesting stories in the news of late, and although you may already know the gist of them, we hope to be able to provide you with more details—and perhaps a different twist—on those stories in the pages of this issue of Nuclear News. First is the news that Duke Energy plans to pursue—on its own—the "nuclear option" for new baseload generating capacity. According to Brew Barron, chief nuclear officer of Duke Energy's Duke Power subsidiary, the utility is preparing to choose a reactor technology and a plant site and to develop an application for a construction/ operating license for a new nuclear plant. Duke's individual effort will be in addition to its participation in the NuStart consortium, which is also applying to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for early site permits, certification for two reactor designs, and a construction/operating license. See Associate Editor Mike Blake's story that leads off the Power section on page 11.
