NRC proposes plane-crash reviews for new plants

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission unveiled the third in a series of major steps to enhance the post-September 11 security of nuclear power plants. The agency's latest proposal, announced on April 24, would require an applicant for a new reactor design certification to assess how the design, "to the extent practicable," could have greater built-in protections to avoid or mitigate the effects of a large commercial airplane crash.
