First ITER TF coil strands qualified

The official news outlet of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) has reported that on March 29, the first sample of cable strands of the type intended for use in the tokamak fusion reactor's toroidal field (TF) coils completed testing and met all of the necessary qualifications for ITER. The TF coils, like the rest of the hardware intended for ITER, will have to be able to perform as designed through several years of long, demanding duty cycles in the reactor-culminating with operation in the neutron flux produced by deuterium-tritium fusion-in order to carry out ITER's mission: resolving the last remaining scientific and engineering issues to make magnetic confinement fusion a practical energy source.
