NPIC&HMIT 2006: I&C regulatory challenges abound

As part of the 5th International Topical Meeting on Nuclear Plant Instrumentation, Controls, and Human-Machine Interface Technology (NPIC&HMIT 2006), held alongside the 2006 ANS Winter Meeting, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission organized a panel session on regulatory challenges and approaches to advanced systems. The session, led by David Desaulniers, of the NRC's Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, focused on the integration of human factors into new nuclear power plant designs. Desaulniers made it clear that one of the challenges for the NRC is the lack of experienced staff for licensing new plants.
