For nearly two years, Walmart has been attempting to address a radioactive material control problem that would pose hazards over only a limited range of conditions but-because of the sheer size of the retail chain, with hundreds of locations-has proven to be widespread. Self-illuminating "exit" signs, with radioactive tritium energizing phosphors in gas tubes within the signs, continue to be discovered missing from some stores, and in other cases have been found after an initial failure to locate them.
