The ANS Standards Committee's ANS-53 Subcommittee, High-Temperature Gas Reactors (HTGR), first drafted ANS-53.1, Nuclear Safety Criteria for the Design of Stationary Gas Cooled Reactor Plants, in 1974. In the late 1970s, however, waning interest in gas reactors in the United States left the standard incomplete. ANS-53.1 's light-water reactor counterparts-ANS-51.1, Nuclear Safety Criteria for the Design of Stationary Pressurized Water Reactor Plants, and ANS-52.1, Nuclear Safety Criteria for the Design of Stationary Boiling Water Reactor Plants-were updated in 1983, addressing more comprehensive, risk-based safety classification. At that time, ANS-58.14, Safety and Pressure Integrity Classification Criteria for Light Water Reactors, was initiated to supersede the safety and pressure integrity classification criteria in ANS-51.1 and ANS-52.1.
