Ideal places for spent fuel

I recently traveled to several Western states, including California, Idaho, Nevada, and Utah. In each of those states I could see several locations that were flat and dry and were not near any towns. They looked like ideal places for spent fuel from nuclear power plants to be stored safely and kept available to be reprocessed so that the uranium and plutonium in that spent fuel could be used as fuel in other nuclear power plants.rnSuch storage places, known as monitored retrievable storage installations, could be prepared and licensed for use much sooner than the Yucca Mountain storage facility, which has been under consideration for years.
