DOE begins to shape the U.S. nuclear industry

The nuclear power production industry in the United States is primarily a private investor-owned industry. The industry, however, remains linked to the political process through regulation, legislative action, and economic support. While regulation and legislative action shape the nuclear industry overall, decisions by the Department of Energy regarding the allocation of financial assistance can have an impact on individual companies, thus helping or hurting investors disproportionately. Several events that occurred during the summer of 2009 are likely to change the corporate landscape in the U.S. nuclear industry.
