The nrc will continue to provide potassium iodide to state agencies that request it for distribution to residents in the 10-mile-radius emergency planning zones around nuclear power plants. Potassium iodide (KI) migrates ir the human body to the thyroid gland and blocks the uptake of other iodine-bearing chemicals. In most accident scenarios involving the release of radioactive material, the most significant public health threat is believed to be the radioactive isotopes of iodine. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission first offered KI to the 34 eligible states in 2001, and then offered a one-time replenishment in 2006.
