A PROPOSED RULE ON NONPOWER REACTOR SECURITY

A proposed rule on nonpower reactor security has been issued by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, with a public comment deadline of June 15. The draft rule formalizes requirements for U.S. research and test reactors to have the Federal Bureau of Investigation perform fingerprint-based background checks on staff members who have unescorted access to facilities. The proposal would implement requirements of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, making permanent those measures imposed by NRC orders that were issued in 2007.
