Former NRC chairman Klein at odds with Jaczko decision

Nuclear Regulatory Commis-sion Chairman Gregory Jaczko had no response to an open letter to journalists released in late October by former NRC chairman Dale Klein, who strongly disagrees with Jaczko's decision to terminate the NRC's work on the Yucca Mountain repository license application. Earlier in October, Jaczko had decided on an "orderly closure" to the licensing activ-ities, based on, he said, the NRC's budget guidance for fiscal year 2011 (AW, Nov. 2010, p. 17). The agency's budget request for FY 2011 reflects the possibility that the Department of Energy, which filed the li-cense application with the NRC, would withdraw the application or that the NRC would suspend its review of the application.
