New program to develop Chernobyl-affected regions

A new five-year program to alleviate the impact of the 1986 disaster at Chernobyl, which lies near the Belarus-Ukraine border, was presented on July 20 by Emergencies Minister Enver Bariyev to the Council of Ministers. After years of people in the affected regions of Belarus being dependent on humanitarian assistance, Bariyev said, a new approach is needed. The program will focus on comprehensive social and economic development, particularly in the Gomel, Mogilev, and Brest regions, and will include efforts to attract people to move into these areas.
