Areva formation undergoing antitrust investigation

The European Commission announced on June 2 that it has begun an investigation into the agreement drawn up to establish Areva NP, the joint venture of France's Areva and Germany's Siemens, to assess whether some "non-compete" clauses in the agreement violate European Union antitrust rules. The probe was triggered by a complaint from Siemens, which wants to sell its stake in Areva NP to Areva, as required under the agreement if Siemens were to leave the venture. Siemens claims that the noncompete clauses in the agreement would unfairly bar it from competing in some areas for eight years.
