North Anna Remained Safe and was shut down without incident following the August 23 earthquake centered near Mineral, Va. The 5.8 magnitude quake was not reported to have led to significant injuries or damage in the vicinity but was felt along much of the East Coast and as far west as Illinois. Dominion Generation stated that its two 913-MWe pressurized water reactors at the North Anna site tripped automatically from a loss of off-site power around 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. All four backup diesel generators started automatically and provided power to the emergency buses. One diesel was later shut down because of a coolant leak. The reactor cores and spent fuel were adequately cooled.
