Fukushima Daiichi accident delays design approvals

The issuance of interim generic approval for the two reactor designs submitted for inclusion in the United Kingdom's new nuclear construction program is being pushed back from June until at least September, when a final report is to be presented on the implications of and the lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi accident for the United Kingdom. Chris Huhne, secretary of state for energy and climate change, requested that Mike Weightman, chief nuclear inspector (see following story), provide the report, and noted that its conclusions should be taken into account by the United Kingdom's two nuclear regulators, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Environment Agency, as they carry out generic design assessments (GDA) for the reactor designs.
