Intervenor notes similarity to Fukushima Daiichi

A General Electric BWR-3 with a Mark I containment, roughly 40 years old, operates at a coastal site where rough water is not unusual. These similarities to Japan's Fukushima Daiichi-1 have drawn attention to Entergy Nuclear's Pilgrim, a 690-MWe boiling water reactor near Plymouth, Mass., and have prompted intervenors in the license renewal proceeding for the reactor to ask that no decision be made until the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has evaluated the lessons learned from the March accident at Fukushima Daiichi. As it is, the NRC staff has sent Entergy a draft request for additional information (RAI), unrelated to Fukushima Daiichi, that would have to be resolved before renewal could be approved.
