At the Department of Energy's Hanford Site near Richland, Wash., a 55-inch-diameter hole was cut in the top of waste tank C-107 to allow a Mobile Arm Retrieval System (MARS) to be installed. Cut through 15 inches of concrete and steel rebar, the hole allowed for the placement of a new riser for the MARS unit, which will be used to remove about 247 000 gallons of radioactive and chemical waste from the single-shell tank.
