Government corporation to explore nuclear power

The government of Malaysia has formed a corporation to spearhead the planning effort for the deployment of nuclear power in the country, which is heavily dependent on coal, in order to diversify its energy mix. The establishment of the Malaysia Nuclear Power Corporation was one of several new projects in the oil, gas, and energy sector, one of the government's National Key Economic Areas announced on January 11 by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak. Najib appointed Mohd Zamzam bin Jaafar the chief executive officer of the corporation, which aims to have a nuclear plant ready for commissioning in 11 or 12 years.
