NRC issues final SER for fuel fabrication plant

The final safety evaluation report (SER) for the application submitted by Shaw Areva MOX Services LLC for a licence to possess and use radioactive material at the Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility (MFFF) at the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site, near Aiken, S.C., was issued in December by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The SER documents the NRC staff's technical safety review of the license application but does not represent a decision to issue the license. The NRC said in a December 27 statement that a license will be issued only if the agency verifies that Shaw Areva MOX Services has properly constructed the principal structures, systems, and components of the plant. That stage is expected to be several years away, according to the NRC.
