NRC renews license for operation to 2034

On November 30, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced that it has renewed the operating license for the Nebraska Public Power District's (NPPD) Cooper reactor. The 815-MWe boiling water reactor near Brownville, Neb., became the 60th power reactor in the United States to be granted renewal. The 20-year extension defers the license expiration date to January 18,2034. Nebraska is the only state in the union where baseload electricity production facilities cannot be privately owned, so both Cooper and the state's other power reactor, Fort Calhoun, are owned by public power districts (the latter by the Omaha Public Power District). NPPD, however, has contracted Entergy Nuclear Operations to operate Cooper.
