BWCS to convert DU at Paducah, Portsmouth

Babcock & Wilcox Conversion Services, a partnership of Babcock & Wilcox Technical Services Group Inc. and URS, has received a five-year, $428-mil-lion contract from the Department of Energy to operate conversion facilities for depleted uranium at the gaseous diffusion enrichment plants at Paducah, Ky., and Portsmouth, Ohio. According to the December 9 announcement, BWCS will convert depleted uranium hexafluoride to an oxide that would be more suitable for transport and disposal. Westinghouse Electric Company announced on December 8 that it has received a contract worth €130 million (about $172 million) to provide four emergency diesel generators and two buildings to house them, along with related equipment, for the two-reactor Beznau plant in Switzerland. Installation is to be completed during refueling outages in 2014, in the spring for Unit 1 and the autumn for Unit 2. Westinghouse has also announced the receipt of a five-year contract from Asociacion Nuclear Asco Vandellos, of Spain, for engineering services at the Asco and Vandellos plants.
