EPRI releases report on severe accident mitigation

A report issued by the Electric Power Research Institute on September 25 concludes that a combination of mitigation strategies would more effectively prevent off-site consequences of a severe reactor accident than any one single approach would. The most effective strategies, it says, involve combinations of active coolant injection and containment venting. This finding, based on simulations carried out with MAAP accident analysis software code, applies specifically to boiling water reactors with Mark I or Mark II containments. EPRI plans other studies relevant to Mark III BWRs and to pressurized water reactors.
