Accelerator-driven system begins operation

The first fully coupledaccelera-tor-driven system (ADS) for fission in a reactor began trial operation on January 11 at the Belgium nuclear research center, SCK-CEN, in Mol. GUINEVERE (Generator of Uninterrupted Intense NEu-trons at the lead VEnus REactor), which includes a small zero-power lead-cooled reactor linked to a particle accelerator, was designed as a demonstration model to support the development of a much larger ADS called MYRRHA (Multipurpose hYbrid Research Reactor for High-tech Applications).
