In late January, operational events oc-curred at the Byron and San Onofre plants that led to minor releases of radioactive steam. Because the plants are located with-in 100 miles of Chicago and Los Angeles, respectively, coverage by the local news media drew the attention of more people than might have been the case in less-pop-ulated regions.
