New Central, Eastern U.S. seismic model for reactors

A joint effort of the Electric Power Re-search Institute, the Department of Energy, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has produced a new seismic study of the Central and Eastern United States (CEUS)-a zone that extends from the Atlantic Coast rough-ly to the eastern edge of the Rocky Moun-tains-for use in the assessment of hazards to nuclear facilities. Like the SOARCA re-port (see previous story), the CEUS study seems especially timely in light of the seis-mically generated Fukushima Daiichi acci-dent in Japan. Also like SOARCA, the CEUS study was in the works long before the March 2011 accident, having begun in 2008. It replaces previous seismic source models that had been used by industry and government since the 1980s.
