Draft EIS issued for proposed New Mexico facility

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking public comment on a draft environmental impact statement (EIS) for a proposed uranium deconversion facility to be located near Hobbs, N.M. On December 30, 2009, International Isotopes Fluorine Products, a subsidiary of International Isotopes Inc., applied for a license to construct and operate the facility, which will deconvert depleted uranium hexafluoride (DUF6) from uranium enrichment facilities into fluorine products for commercial use and depleted uranium oxides for long-term stable disposal. The draft EIS contains the NRC staff's preliminary assessment that no large environmental impacts are expected from the facility. Comments will be accepted through February 27, 2012.
