Pakistani national sentenced for illegal nuclear exports

A Maryland businessman has been sentenced to over three years in prison for conspiring to export to Pakistan materials and equipment that could be used in nuclear reactors, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). On January 6, U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz sentenced Nadeem Akhtar, 46, of Silver Spring, Md., to 37 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release, for conspiring to commit export violations and to defraud the United States in connection with a scheme to illegally export nuclear-related materials.
