While the industry awaits the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's issuance of combined construction and operating licenses (COL) for new plant construction at the Vogtle site in Georgia and the Summer site in South Carolina, activities are continuing in other segments of the industry. At the Hanford Site, work is under way, under contractor Bechtel National Inc., on the Department of Energy's $12-billion Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant, which will be the largest radioactive waste treatment plant in the world. Currently, about 3300 people are working on the project, which is to be commissioned in 2019 and at full operation by 2022.
