Russia to skip 2016 Nuclear Security Summit

Russia is planning to boycott the next Nuclear Security Summit (NSS), to be held in 2016, that nation's top diplomat in the United States has announced. "We are not planning to attend the summit, not because we are not committed to nonproliferation," Sergei Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the United States, told reporters on November 5. "We do not see added value coming out of these meetings." In Kislyaks view, instead of "preparing another big splash," more attention should be paid to organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency "that have been created by all of us to deal with these issues." Kislyak also suggested that the United States was attempting to dominate the proceedings for the 2016 conference, to be held in the United States and hosted by President Barack Obama.
