Army proving ground to get closure EIS

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced in the November 3 Federal Register that it will prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) on the U.S. Army's request that the NRC terminate the materials license that allowed the use of depleted uranium (DU) munitions at the Jefferson Proving Ground in Indiana. The scope of the EIS is open to public comment through December 18, and a public scoping meeting was scheduled for December 3 in Madison, Ind. As it has sought to do in regard to property in Hawaii where DU has been used for several years, the Army is seeking to end its license responsibilities at the Jefferson Proving Ground while leaving the DU in place. The Army submitted a decommissioning plan and environmental report for the proving ground in August 2013.
