Groups attack new waste storage rule

The first legal challenge to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's new waste storage rule came a week after the rule went into effect on October 20. A coalition of three northeastern states-New York, Connecticut, and Vermont-filed a petition on October 27 with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit challenging the NRC's rule on the continued storage of spent nuclear fuel. Two days later, on October 29, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and a group of nine other environmental groups filed separate lawsuits with the court against the NRC rule.
