NRC proposes fine against medical firm

After identifying multiple violations of radiation protection regulations during a routine inspection in April 2013, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued Metro Cardiovascular Diagnostics a proposed civil penalty in the amount of $3,500. The practice, located in Florissant, Mo., is authorized to use licensed material permitted by 10 CFR 35.200, Use of unsealed byproduct material for imaging and localization studies for which a written directive is not required. (The majority of Metro Cardiovasculars diagnostic activities involve cardiac imaging.) According to a notice of violation and proposed imposition of civil penalty issued by the NRC on September 30, the most severe infraction, and the one for which the penalty was proposed, involved the use by the practice's nuclear medicine technologist of a survey meter that he knew to be out of calibration to perform waste disposal surveys in June and November 2012. Due to the willful nature of the action, the NRC judged it to be a Severity Level Ⅲ violation (one that could potentially result in moderate safety consequences).
