NRC chairman allison macfarlane is leaving the agency at the end of the year to become director of the Center for International Science and Technology Policy at George Washington University. A geologist by training and a former associate professor of environmental science and policy at George Mason University, Macfarlane was sworn in as the 15th chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in July 2012, following the resignation of Gregory Jaczko. After completing Jaczko's term, Macfarlane was nominated by President Obama for a full five-year term and was confirmed by the Senate in June 2013.
