The year may be winding down, but there's still a lot for us to do-and plenty happening-within the confines of calendar year 2015. The Tennessee Valley Authority's Watts Bar-2 achieved a very important milestone toward its startup with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's issuance of the unit's operating license on October 22. On track to be the first nuclear power plant authorized to start up in the United States since 1996, when Watts Bar-1 received its operating license, Watts Bar-2 has undergone more than 200,000 hours of safety reviews and inspections over eight years, according to Bill Dean, director of the NRC's Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation.
