Development resumes at Energy Fuels' Canyon mine

Energy Fuels Inc. has resumed development at its Canyon mine in northern Arizona and is preparing to restart active mining operations, according to a February 6 announcement. Shaft-sinking operations at Canyon were put on standby in November 2013, a move that Energy Fuels attributed to uranium market conditions and a desire to hold down costs during litigation (NN, Jan. 2014, p. 84). Several environmental groups and a local tribe had challenged U.S. Forest Service actions and decisions about the mine. In November 2013, Energy Fuels and the plaintiffs announced that they had entered into a stipulated agreement under which the plaintiffs' appeal would be stayed while Energy Fuels committed to placing shaft-sinking operations on standby. During the standby period, Energy Fuels continued to conduct non-shaft-sinking operations and maintenance activities.
