Acongressionally mandated report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine has found that although the current supply of medical isotopes molybdenum-99 and technetium-99m is sufficient to meet domestic and global demand, changes to the supply chain before the end of the year could lead to severe shortages and affect the delivery of medical care. Sponsored by the Department of Energy, the report, Molybdenum-99 for Medical Imaging, examines the production and use of Mo-99 and Tc-99m, along with associated medical isotopes iodine-131 and xenon-133. The report also assesses the progress made in eliminating high-enriched uranium from Mo-99 production.
