IAEA aids fight against Zika-carrying mosquitoes

To assist the country in its battle against the Zika virus, the International Atomic Energy Agency will facilitate the transfer of a cobalt-60 gamma cell irradiator to Brazil. According to an announcement made on February 23 during a meeting of international experts in Brazilia, the irradiator will help scale up the production of sterile male mosquitoes for use in the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) to suppress the numbers of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that carry the Zika virus in areas most affected by the current outbreaks.
