LITHUANIA'S NUCLEAR SECURITY RECEIVED A "THUMBS UP" from the International Atomic Energy Agency in October, following a two-week International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) mission that was carried out at the request of the Lithuanian government. The scope of the mission included Lithuania's legislative and regulatory framework for nuclear security, the physical protection of materials and facilities, transport security, and computer security, as well as the country's implementation of the 2005 Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM), which was ratified by Lithuania in 2009 and entered into force in May of last year (NN, May 2016, p. 37). According to an October 20 IAEA press release, the IPPAS team observed that the nuclear security regime in Lithuania "is well established and incorporates the fundamental principles of the amended CPPNM."
