THE U.S. SENATE CONFIRMED RITA BARANWAL as assistant secretary of energy for nuclear energy by an 86-5 vote on June 20, after Sen. Catherine Cortez Mas-to (D., Nev.) released the hold she had placed on Department of Energy nominees in protest over federal plutonium shipments to Nevada. President Trump had nominated Baranwal for the position last October, but the Senate failed to move on the nomination, and in line with Senate rules, her name was returned to the president on the first day of the new Congress. Trump resubmitted her nomination on January 16. Baranwal, an ANS member since 2008, previously headed the DOE's Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) initiative, which was established to provide the nuclear community with access to the technical, regulatory, and financial support necessary to move innovative nuclear energy technologies toward commercialization.
