The UK fleet of eight reactors, operated by Électricité de France (EdF), are mostly of the indigenous advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) design and are reaching the end of their licensed lives. Without new builds, installed nuclear power capacity is forecast to fall from 9 GW to 6 GW over the next five years and reach just 1 GW by 2031. However, the two-unit Hinkley Point C project is under construction and slated for completion in the 2025-2026 time frame and other proposed projects may advance in the coming years if ownership and financing challenges can be resolved (Figure 1). Moreover, an Energy White Paper, published by the UK Department for Business, Energy, & Industrial Strategy this week, clearly states that nuclear and advanced nuclear technologies have a key role in achieving goals to carbon neutrality and in realizing a green economic recovery.
