Kyushu Electric to Suspend Sendai Units 1 & 2 Due to Delay in Antiterrorism Upgrades

Kyushu Electric Power Co. plans to shutdown Units 1 and 2 (846 MWe PWRs)at its Sendai Nuclear Power Plant next year due to a delay in implementingantiterrorism measures required byregulators.Stricter safety regulations, introducedin 2013 by Japan's Nuclear RegulationAuthority (NRA), require nuclear plantoperators to build facilities that areable to maintain reactors cooling viaremote control and prevent the releaseof radioactive materials, even if theunits come under terrorist attacks. InApril, the NRA refused Kyushu Electric'srequest to postpone the deadlines forcompletion of antiterrorism upgrades—March 17 and May 21, 2020 for Units 1and 2, respectively. The two units will betemporarily closed the day before thedeadline dates.
