PROGRESS GETS STATE NOD FOR TWO NEW NUKES IN FL

The Florida Public Service Commission last week backed Progress Energy Florida's plans for two new nuclear reactors at a greenfield site in Levy County, Fla., making Progress the second company to receive a positive need determination from the Commission this year. Florida Power and Light received a similar determination from the PSC in March (NFC Monitor, Vol. 27 No. 13). "The new units are projected to satisfy the generation needs of Progress through 2023 while emitting zero greenhouse gases and reducing Florida's dependence on natural gas and fuel oil," the PSC noted in a statement after its ruling.
